these past few weeks I’ve been thinking a lot beginning to seriously blog and using my experiences of the past year to help you girls out there that might be looking for exactly this.
Benjamin Franklin once said: ” By failing to prepare, you prepare to fail”
Which is why today I have decided to make a post about How To Prepare For A Photoshoot because when I first started modeling and going to different photoshoots I really wished someone on the internet would’ve made that kind of list already.
So without further a do, here is my list of things you need to do to get ready for a photoshoot! Enjoy!
#1 Pack your essentials that you are going to need for that photoshoot. For example:
This completely depends on what kind of photoshoot you’re going to. If you’re going to a normal photoshoot for fun or maybe even for an art photographer or a blog, they will most likely tell you what kinds of outfits from your own wardrobe to bring.
I always try to think too much is better than too little, but avoid bringing your entire wardrobe to the shoot. If you have trouble deciding, ask a friend for their opinion.
If you’re going to a fashion or editorial shoot or anything else where the clothes are being provided for you. Always bring 1-2 pairs of nude underwear. Preferably seamless so it doesn’t show. Also bring a bathrobe and a pair of comfortable shoes. You will be glad you brought them, trust me!
- Beauty Essentials
What I mean by that are:
- toothbrush and toothpaste
- Deodorant! ( this is so important girls!)
- A Towel
- A washcloth
Just trust me on these girls. Some of the items listed seem so weird but there will be a moment at a photoshoot where you need them and you’ll be so glad you packed everything.
#2 Plan ahead!
Going to a photoshoot is an extremely stressful thing when you are not prepared. So I like to plan out my entire day 24 hours ahead. I schedule everything from when I wake up to when I have to arrive there. My schedule usually looks something like this:
The night before:
go through my bags to see if I have everything packed
put my bags next to the door
and go get my beauty sleep
The next morning:
7:30 – wake up, get up and go to the bathroom (we’ll get to that in #3)
8:30 – eat breakfast ( we’ll get to that in # 4)
9:00 – put on a comfortable pair of leggings, a t-shirt and my sneakers and head out!
then I like to schedule so I will get to the shoot 15 minutes early so I still have some buffer!
#3 What to do in the bathroom in the morning
GIRLS! This is so important. Looking good on your shoot is very important but you know what’s even more important? Felling good! If you don’t feel good and comfortable on set you will end up dreading your whole entire day at the shoot.
Now there are many factors that play part in wether or not you’re going to feel good and comfortable on set. One very important one is being clean and neat. That being said, here are the most important things to do ( and not to do) in the bathroom before your shoot
1 Get Clean!
Shower well, wash your hair, brush your teeth and just get overall as clean as you can possibly get. Try to avoid conditioning your hair on the day of the shoot and the night before. When your hair is too soft it is hard to style it in any way. The styles just won’t hold, no matter what you do with it or how much hairspray you use.
2 Loose the hair! ( well except for the one on your head, that one may stay)
But all the other hair must go. So shave your body anywhere you can possibly have hair that shouldn’t be there or might look ugly. You’re going to want to look perfect and have amazing skin in the pictures, which leads me to #3
3 Moisturize and Exfoliate
the secret to great glowing, beautiful skin isn’t really a secret at all. When I know I have a big important shoot coming up I try to avoid wearing make up and I exfoliate my entire body and moisturize the morning of the shoot. That way I will not only look but also feel amazing. Since mostly any girl knows that it’s not only great for your skin but also makes you feel relaxed.
4 Take off your nail polish and trim those nails
what is very important at a photoshoot are the small details that can make or break the entire picture. For example: If the model has chipped nail polish or dirt under her nails, theres only so much the photoshop artist can do. So make sure your hands and feet look neat and clean and pretty. Everyone else working on the project will thank you 🙂
#4 Eat! Eat! Eat!
Girls, this is something that I have had to learn the hard way. When I first started out I thought that if I ate breakfast the morning of the shoot that my belly would look big and it would make me look fat and I ended up fainting on set because I hadn’t eaten at all or I thought that I couldn’t eat all day on set so I ate too much before the shoot and looked bloated. I was a beginner at that time and there aren’t many people that teach you this kind of stuff. So here I am, telling you how to go about eating.
- Eat a light breakfast in the morning. Some people like to eat in the morning, some don’t but try to eat at least a little. Here are some of my favorite pre-photoshoot or casting meals:
Honey- Lemon- Ricotta Toast
Coconut Flour Pancakes
Vanilla Mint Smoothie
- Pack a small lunch for on set. If you only have a small breakfast you will get hungry later on but don’t want to look bloated in the pictures. If it’s not an all day shoot, I usually only pack a small snack like some almonds or some carrots and cucumber. If it’s a long shoot I like to pack a small lunch like some broccoli and tuna or a small sandwich.
Those were my 4 tips on how to prepare for a photoshoot. I really hope I could help. If you have any more questions feel free to contact me anywhere:
I look forward to hearing from you and I hope you have the best first photoshoot ever!
Much Love! Valerie
